Katfish Sportfishing Charters - FAQ's

What is provided?
All equipment, fishing tackle, and bait at no extra cost.

What do I need to bring?
Small cooler with food and drinks (no glass containers), hats, sunscreen, long-sleeve shirt or sweatshirt/rain gear, camera and a desire to catch fish.

Will I get Seasick?

While every effort is made to keep the boat in calm waters, sea conditions is one thing the captain cannot control. If you are susceptible to seasickness, please take medication before leaving the dock. Your trip will be ruined if you get sick. The scolpamine transaderm patch is highly effective and is again available as a prescription. Over the counter remedies are also available. Ask your druggist for a recommendation. Returning to the dock due to seasickness does not constitute a refund.

What can I not bring?

Bad moods and BANANAS

Can I bring alcohol on the boat?

No.  Beer and wine are allowed in a reasonable quantity; however we pr
efer cans to bottles because of the possibility of breakage.  This is provided you are old enough to drink.

How much should I tip the mate?
The mate works for tips. Tipping the mate is customary and is based on your discretion.  20% of the charter fee is customary.

Is the Katfish licensed?
Absolutely!  The Katfish is a registered DEC charter boat licensed to carry up to 6 paying anglers. The Captain has a 100-ton Master license issued by the US Coast Guard. The Captain and crew participate in the Coast Guard drug-testing program. In conjunction with Coast Guard Certification and the NY DEC, the Katfish has all state and federal fishing permits.

How many people can we take fishing?

While the Coast Guard has certified the Katfish for 6 passengers, we try to limit the number of people actually fishing to 4.  This provides each fishing passenger a great experience without overcrowding.

What about bad weather?
The Captain keeps a close eye on the local weather and makes a determination as early as possible if the conditions are appropriate and safe to leave the dock.  If you have any concerns, you may call 917-693-8908 to receive an update.  Please note that you will have a very grumpy Captain if you call at 3:00 a.m.  Please be considerate of your calling time and note that we are on Eastern Standard Time.

What if I need to cancel my trip?
We try to be flexible and work with you to find a solution to changes in your plans.

What if the fishing is bad?

The fishing is never bad. On rare occasions, the catching is difficult.  In that case, just remember that "a bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work".

How Many Striped Bass are we able to keep?
Due to the new 2015 NYS DEC laws you can catch as many stripers as you like. You are allowed to keep 1 fish per person. We are allowed to retain 1 fish for each soul on board.

Does the mate clean the fish?
Your mate will clean or prepare all your fish to your specifications.
